It is World Hypertension Day today! Wondering what’s the big deal about hypertension (high blood pressure) and your kidneys? If that thought has ever crossed your mind, don’t scroll away because we are about to tell you something very important. There are two ways that hypertension is related to your kidneys: 1️⃣ Hypertension is the second leading cause of kidney failure in Singapore, with 1 in 4 Singaporeans being diagnosed with hypertension. When one has high blood pressure, it can damage the blood vessels in the kidneys over time. This affects the kidneys’ ability to function well as blood supply to them is reduced — they are thus unable to filter blood and regulate the fluid, hormones, acids and salts in the body. Extra fluid and toxic wastes accumulated in the body may increase the blood pressure even more, resulting in a vicious cycle. 2️⃣ For those with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), one of the complications is high blood pressure. Our kidneys play a key role in regulating our blood pressure and ensuring that it stays in a healthy range. When the kidneys are diseased, their ability to regulate blood pressure is affected, resulting in an increase in blood pressure. It is imperative to not only control your blood pressure with lifestyle changes, but also take care of your kidneys. In return, your kidneys will take care of you! 🥰 Find out more about hypertension here: bit.ly/LeadingCauseHypertension #WorldHypertensionDay
