Everyday up to a 100 billion cells are being replaced in your body. There are between 50 and 75 trillion cells in the body according to the New York Public Library Science Desk Reference. Every cell has a finite life span, and when they die, they are replaced with new cells. About 100 million new red blood cells are being formed every minute. The stomach lining cells are replaced every 2 days, intestine lining every 2 to 4 days and lung alveoli every 8 days. So at the rate of 5% to 30% a year there should be a new you every seven to fifteen years. The raw materials required for making your new cells depend on the quality of your diet. This is where good nutrition and good habits matter everyday. Smoking, excessive synthetic chemicals in processed foods, pollution or a sedentary lifestyle contributes to more cell damage. Foods that are refined or fried with trans-fat oils and lacking in variety will not provide the nutrients your body need to make new cells. Nutrients found in whole and responsibly produced foods are complex. The calories like carbohydrates, fats and proteins are never alone but come with an abundance of minerals, vitamins, live enzymes, thousands of flavones and hundreds of probiotic species. Every single nutrient that comes with whole organic foods has a purpose. Remove or reduce any single nutrient and the purpose for which it exist in that food will fail. Good nutrition matters because you want to age gracefully at the slowest possible rate so the years will be good to you.
