Inspired by the adage “a picture paints a thousand words”, residents of Hong Kah North took up their paint or digital brushes to tell stories about family and friends, love and woes, fond memories and trying times, and the community they call their own. Around 50 participants sent in hand-drawn art on the theme 'Together, A Hong Kah North Family' for an art competition in March this year. The Hong Kah North community and a panel of judges then voted on drawings they were most moved by, with winning entries shared through social media and some incorporated into the designs of tote bags for the community in future. “Whether the pieces are created by adults or children, it is nice to see the drawings reflect each of our personal understanding of what ‘community’ means to us,” shares 28-year-old Katherine Tan, one of the seven winners. She explains, “The drawings are a celebration of the community and the diverse strengths that we have. I thought the theme was brought out well and it was nice to see that there were many submissions.” Her piece, which champions the sentiment ‘Alone we can do so little, Together we can do so much’ was soothing for her to create. “There wasn’t much going on because of the pandemic. I enjoyed working on my drawing as it released stress and boredom through creativity. I feel that art is an interesting way to show appreciation for the community, and to get everyone involved. Another winner is 16-year-old Hong Kah North resident Teoh Yong Han, who has been drawing since she was five. “I hope this contest gets residents more excited to learn more about our neighbourhood and its people,” she shares. The School of The Arts (SOTA) student even tried her hand at digital art for the first time for the contest. “Learning new software was a useful experience. It opened my eyes to new ways of developing my art.” Her completed piece, among the three most popular entries, showcases a vibrant image of the hustle and bustle of the warm Hong Kah North community. #ACaringCommunity #PeoplesAssociation
