Celebrating its 15th anniversary, Belgian Independent Bottlers, The Nectar, released a couple of special expressions. On the left is the Secret Highland 1985; a 35yo single malt. On the nose, it offers up "old" fruit notes. Mirabelles, ripe apples, peaches, followed by furniture polish, dried wildflowers and hints of dusty books with plenty of waxy notes. On the mouth, it is rich, oily and fairly sweet. It starts on Earl Grey tea and vanilla, melting into a little tangerine, herbal tea with honey, mint leaves and a little cake. A really gorgeous dram! On the right is the Secret Islay 2013: a 7 year old single malt matured in Port Wood. On the nose, it offers a clear medicinal side up front -- iodine and bandages. Cassis, jammy plums and blood orange quickly follow. The sweet palate offers strawberry candy, plum and redcurrant jam. Savoury pepper, ash and iodine mingle, calling to mind wintry coasts. The finish is medium length with smoke, liquorice and hints of red fruits. Definitely one for Islay whisky lovers.
