Did you know that the Singapore Botanic Gardens’ heritage of organising flower shows dates back to 1861? With the aim of encouraging local cultivation, the first ‘Show of Flowers, Vegetables and Fruit’ at the Esplanade was organised 160 years ago by Lawrence Niven, the first Manager of the Gardens. Subsequent Superintendents and Directors continued this tradition by holding flower shows both within the Gardens and at external venues. Pictured here is the Plant House from 1882. Curious about the Gardens’ rich heritage? Find out more with SBG’s Heritage Festival 2021 held in conjunction with the SGF Hort Show.
