What goes on behind the process of developing a new workshop at Applelulu Crafts? ☺️ More than 2 - 3 weeks combined of time and effort spent on different stages! Take for example our new Ori Wallet 折り財布. It usually begins with an inspiration or idea—like the interest to develop a long wallet that’s able to fit a mobile phone. We’ll find pockets of time between workshops to study different Japanese designs and patterns, finally drawing from a certain construction method. Then comes the process of procuring different materials locally and overseas needed to put together the wallet. If they’re not suitable, we’ll need to reorder others and wait for them to arrive. When the materials like the D-ring, zippers, bias binding, straps, interfacings and fabric arrive, we can then start crafting a trial make (a very exciting moment for us!) These are the pieces that you usually see hanging on our rack in our studio as a visual reference during workshops. The trial make is when we tweak positions, placements, measurements, seam allowances and even the construction method itself. If the “original” method is not feasible, it might be back to the drawing block again during this stage. If all’s good, we’ll write down all the notes from the first make and work again on a second, hopefully final make with all the refined steps. This is when we decide if the workshop is a good to go! Even when we have a happy make in hand, that’s not final yet. We will spend a few days to digitise the whole instruction on our computer. Before launching it, we also need to take photos of the project, the colour options for the accessories, visit our suppliers one last time to finalise the variety, colour codes and costs of materials. After listing the workshop on our website, we then share it on our social media platforms (what you finally see) and begin answering enquiries and taking in bookings for the workshop. Hope this gives you a better understanding of what or how we do things! Each workshop conceived with lots of love and the crafting journey of our crafters in mind.
