Sweat it out and stay in shape with Hillview CC Youth Network (YN). Working out and developing a healthy lifestyle is always more fun and sustainable when you are in a group, be it physical or virtual. ‘Sweat It Out Saturday’ online workout sessions, initiated by Hillview CC YN was conceived to lift spirits and physical energy while living through the restrictions of the pandemic. “The main objective is to provide a virtual platform for residents to try out new forms of exercises and adopt a healthy lifestyle while still maintaining physical distancing,” explains Qin Ze, 26, main organiser and a Grassroot Leader with Hillview CC YN. “We have made the classes accessible to everyone so they can try out different workouts from the comfort of their home. So far, we’ve organised Yoga, Barre, HIIT, BoxFit and Zumba,” he continues. Although the sessions are virtual, they have connected residents too. “It is very heartwarming to see a father attend a yoga class while his children “play” yoga beside him,” says Ms Ang Qiuluan, one of the participants who invited her friends to join in via Instagram so they can all work out together. Ms Eunice Tan, another participant, was even reconnected with her ex-colleague through the programme. “It was a pleasant surprise to see someone you know but haven’t seen for a while on the screen.” ‘Sweat It Out Saturday’ is designed to be a sustainable long-term health and wellness programme for the community. The yoga sessions, for example, offer detailed instructions so residents can do the workouts on their own as well. Or they can regroup and do it together when the pandemic restrictions are lifted. “The response has been very encouraging. We hope to reach out to more people through alliances with other Youth Networks,” confides Qin Ze about the next phase of ‘Sweat It Out Saturday.
