#jendela Titles matter to artist Susanna Tan. She shares more about two works and her interest in floral arrangements. "Face is a face is a face is a face draws reference from Gertrude Stein's 1913 poem, Sacred Emily. It laments the fact that a noun invokes, yet limits the imagery and emotions associated with it — a face is a face, it is what it is and nothing more. Maybe You Wouldn't Be Sad is the last sentence spoken by my mother in the video work. It comes from a personal and tender place, a note to self that my mother has determined that I wouldn't be sad about her eventual passing. It feels quite surreal. When I arrange a bouquet, I get hints from the sender about the recipient – character, preferences, stories. Putting together a bouquet is like painting a portrait of someone but in a different medium – flowers." Susanna's works are are part of Happens When Nothing Happens, a Visual Arts exhibition at Esplanade's Jendela until 7 Oct 2018. Come check it out.
