“Through our bird watching sessions, I have come to realise that many fellow enthusiasts are my neighbours! We have since gotten to know each other better,” shares 51-year-old Azmi Mohamad, a community volunteer who helps as a guide for Taman Jurong Kakis’ regular bird watching sessions organised since November 2020 under the Green@Heart Interest Group. “My wife has a passion for photography and I love nature, helping out as guides gives us the chance to spend more quality time together while meeting new friends too.” “I signed up with my best buddy as we both love birds.” recalls Ms P Manimegalai, a participant at last month’s bird watching session at Jurong Lake Gardens. “We enjoyed the fascinating colours and personalities of the birds we spotted. We also swapped stories with fellow participants and our knowledgeable guides!” As a guide, Azmi is glad to share information on bird species and behaviour with participants. “Some were pleasantly surprised to learn that we have birds like owls and eagles in Singapore,” he explains. Participants can get a more up-close look at the avian friends with their own equipment or use those provided by Taman Jurong CC. One of the highlights of last month’s session were the Collared Kingfishers spotted at the Gardens. For first-time participants, being able to get a close-up view of these vibrant birds through telescopic equipment is a brand new experience of Singapore’s rich biodiversity. “Jurong Lake Gardens is beautiful and the walk is not very strenuous. Residents from all walks of life are welcome,” smiles Azmi. “So far, we’ve had families with young kids, retired couples and youths all enjoy our local biodiversity together.
