Civilization is collapsing, the barbarity of the bourgeoisie has been unleashed, and the roads are littered with burning vehicles and dead bodies. The plot, if this movie has one, concerns a husband and wife planning to kill one another, but not before collecting – by force, if necessary – the wife’s inheritance from her parents in the countryside. By turns comical, surreal and grim, WEEKEND would cap a truly incredible seven-year run of 14 features that made Godard’s name and cemented his place in film history.
