Having a major milestone thwarted by the pandemic can be a real bummer. But does love really have to wait when there are more than one way to tie the knot? “My heart goes out to couples who have to postpone or cancel ceremonies during this time. It must have been a nightmare to have an important occasion in their life disrupted,” shared William Cheong, a Family Life Champion (FLC) for MacPherson since 2014 and a licensed solemniser who presided over 500 soleminsations. “With the passing of the new law to enable virtual marriage solemnisation to be conducted remotely, some selected licenced solemnisers attended a half day course in May via zoom to understand the new set of guidelines and processes.” explained William. It is a new experience for everyone. With virtual solemnisation, the couple, witnesses and licensed solemniser can all be at different locations. There are more complex levels of checks and verification, some connectivity issues or logging issues at the beginning but everyone tries to manage and adapt to the new normal. After the virtual solemnisation, the Registry of Marriage (ROM) will courier the marriage certificate to the couple after verification. “We are delighted that William is able to help officiate the solemnisation online, keeping the date special for us, especially on a weekend when the ROM is closed,” shared Fiona Woon, who recently held her virtual solemnisation on 19 Sep. “Before our big day, we had a pre-marriage counselling session with William, where he shared the ups and downs in marriage, the commitments, the importance in having open communications and some conflict resolution skills to prepare us for marriage life. William makes sure we are not just caught up with romantic feelings.” adds Fiona. The role of FLC does not end with the virtual ceremony. In fact, many continue to play a vital part in the newlywed couple’s life providing counsel and lending their support in every way they can. FLCs like William and many others volunteer their time to encourage family involvement in the community through various programmes and initiatives to widen the social network and strengthen family ties in Singapore.
